Healing Eyes in the Digital Age The Ayurvedic Way

Healing Eyes in the Digital Age – The Ayurvedic Way

Written by Dr. Rasika Suriyarao

In today’s digital world, our eyes are working harder than ever. From early school years to long workdays, screens have become part of our everyday lives. But as we stay connected online, many of us are unknowingly disconnecting from our own well-being—especially our eye health.

The truth is, our eyes weren’t made for constant screen time. Dryness, strain, blurry vision, and headaches have become all too common. But Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, offers a gentle and powerful way to restore balance.

Let’s explore how nature can help us protect and nourish our eyes.

Food as Medicine

According to Ayurveda, the eyes are closely connected to the pitta dosha, the fire element in the body. When this element is overheated or imbalanced—especially through overexposure to screens—our vision suffers.

That’s why diet plays such an important role.

Carrots, spinach, and sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamin A, which is essential for healthy vision. Flaxseeds, walnuts, and fish bring in omega-3 fatty acids, which nourish the retina and support overall eye function. These foods not only protect but also cool and balance the pitta energy in the body.

Triphala: A Timeless Healer

One of the most powerful herbal blends in Ayurveda is Triphala—a combination of three fruits: Amalaki, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki. It’s known for detoxifying the body and rejuvenating the eyes.

You can take it in powder or tablet form, or even use it as an eye wash. Rinsing your eyes with cooled Triphala water brings immediate relief from irritation and strain.

Netra Tarpana: Nourishment for the Eyes

Netra Tarpana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy where warm medicated ghee is gently poured around the eyes and held in place for several minutes. It’s a deeply relaxing and healing process.

This treatment hydrates the eye tissues, improves vision, and helps with dryness, fatigue, and long-standing screen-related discomfort. It’s ideal for professionals and students who spend most of their day in front of devices.

Anjana and Cold Compresses

Anjana is the application of herbal eye ointments that help relieve strain, improve clarity, and reduce redness. These ointments are usually mixed with ghee or herbal oils.

You can also use cold compresses soaked in chamomile or rose water. They work wonders for puffy, tired eyes and offer a calming effect at the end of a long day.

Daily Habits to Protect Your Vision

Small changes in your daily routine can have a big impact.

Stay hydrated throughout the day. Our eyes need moisture just like our skin.

Make sure you get enough restful sleep. Sleep gives your eyes time to repair and rejuvenate.

Use natural lighting when possible, and avoid staring at screens in the dark.

Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Practice simple eye yoga techniques like gentle blinking, palming, and shifting focus from near to far. These exercises help reduce tension and improve focus.

From Dr. Rasika

Our eyes do more than help us see. They hold emotion, connection, and memory. They witness the world—and reflect our inner light.

When we nurture our eyes with care, mindfulness, and the wisdom of Ayurveda, we not only protect our vision but also honor the way we experience life.

Let’s take this journey together—from screen fatigue to clarity, from tension to calm—with the healing touch of nature.
